The boat was carrying up to 50 Hindu pilgrims, police said.
They were on their way to a temple when the boat suddenly tipped over and sank in the middle of the Karatoa River near the town of Boda in northern Bangladesh.
Shipwreck tragedies, caused by lack of maintenance and overcrowding on board, are common in Bangladesh, a poor country crossed by rivers.
