Philippine authorities today began evacuating residents from coastal areas as Typhoon Noru approached the main island of Luzon.
Reuters quoted the Philippine Disaster Management Agency as saying: "Noru has turned into a giant typhoon after the wind speed it raises increased to 185 kilometers per hour, after it was 120 kilometers per hour yesterday," noting that the strength of the typhoon is increasing and may reach land in the afternoon. Today or in the evening, it generates winds of between 185 and 205 kilometers per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Noro is the 11th to hit the Philippines this year and will bring heavy rains to the capital region and neighboring provinces this afternoon.
