The 128th national congress of firefighters, which ended on Saturday in Nancy, resounded less with fanfares than with the grievances of firefighters after a summer marked by fires of a dramatic scale (nearly 63,000 hectares of forest ravaged ).
In the aisles of the exhibition center, which hosted the annual high mass, Manuel, a professional firefighter in Sarthe, explains that he fought in July
"the biggest fire ever seen in living memory"
in his department, that is 328 hectares left in smoke.
“We found ourselves in difficulty, because we had sent staff to Gironde and Finistère to fight against the megafires.
In our turn, we had to benefit from reinforcements from other territories
,” explains the group leader.
He says to himself
“without illusion”
concerning the additional means claimed by the departmental fire and rescue services (Sdis), due to
“a constrained economic context where the State is fighting on all fronts”
