Cubans are voting on a new family law allowing same-sex marriage and surrogacy.
The new regulation is intended to replace the regulation that has been in force since 1975.
The reform envisages that marriage will in future be defined as a connection "between two people" regardless of their gender.
Adoption should also be allowed for homosexual couples, and surrogacy should be legalized without financial compensation.
It is the first referendum on changing the law in the socialist island state.
In view of the great dissatisfaction in the country because of the economic problems, the election could become a protest vote against the government.
