Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in the state as Tropical Storm Ian intensified over the Caribbean.
"This storm has the potential to turn into a major hurricane and we encourage all Florida residents to make their preparations," DeSantis said in a statement today. "We are coordinating with all local government partners to monitor the potential effects of this storm."
The US National Hurricane Center indicated that Storm Ian is expected to strengthen quickly before moving over western Cuba and approaching Florida with the strength of the main hurricane, as it is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the state by the middle of next week.
