2022-09-25T18:34:56.702Z

George Maloney is expected to win the elections and become the first woman in the position • Recently she said in an interview to "Israel this week": "Today's anti-Semitism has become anti-Israelism" • With her in the coalition it is also expected to cooperate with the colorful former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi

51 million Italians went to vote today (Sunday) in the elections, which according to the predictions are expected to end with the victory of the leader of the extreme right, Giorgia Maloni, chairman of the "Brothers of Italy" party. The samples are expected to be published at midnight Israel time. If you win, Maloni The 45-year-old will be the first woman to head the state.

Also, Maloney's victory will mean that for the first time since World War II, when Benito Mussolini was at the head of the country, a far-right leader will lead the country.

Maloney publicly opposes rights for the LGBT community and has praised Mussolini several times in the past.

Despite the accusations of fascism, in an exclusive interview with "Israel this week" Meloni recently said that "anti-Semitism today has become anti-Israel."

According to all predictions, the person who is expected to join Maloney's government is Matteo Salvini, the former deputy prime minister and chairman of the "Northern League" party. He is considered pro-Israel, an opponent of BDS and even stated in the past that if he were to head the government, he would move the embassy to Jerusalem.

Also in Maloney's block is the former Prime Minister of Italy and owner of the luxury club Milan, 85-year-old Silvio Berlusconi, who heads the Forza Italia party.

Maloney's main opponent is the chairman of the center-left party, Enrico Latta. By noon, about 19% of those with the right to vote had voted - a percentage similar to that of the last elections about four years ago.

Those with the right to vote in Italy will this time vote for reduced elected houses, in accordance with a recent electoral reform aimed at streamlining and strengthening the government systems in the country.

The number of members in the parliament will be reduced from 630 to 400 and in the senate from 315 to 200.

The distribution of seats is by a mixed method - some by direct election and some by relative and regional election.

In the European Union and the leading European capitals - Berlin, Paris and Spain, where there are left-of-center governments - there is an extremely heavy fear of the victory of the anti-European right in Italy, and of the consequences of such a victory for the future of the Union.

During the campaign, Maloney avoided militant statements against the European Union and worked to transmit messages of continuity, but a comment made by the President of the Union, Ursula von der Leyen, provoked extremely angry reactions in Maloney's coalition of parties.

Due to the complexity of the election system, the results will probably be known only tomorrow or Tuesday.
