Günther Jauch was the face of the RTL annual review for over a quarter of a century.

Now the successors of the TV veteran have been determined: Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg and Thomas Gottschalk.

Munich - Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg follows in what is probably the biggest footsteps that exist in German entertainment television in this millennium.

As RTL announced, the former CSU politician will moderate the annual review this year.

So far, this has been presented by Günther Jauch, who is considered one of the most popular TV hosts in Germany.

Since 1996, the 66-year-old has been the face of "People, Pictures, Emotions" - a full-length show in which the year is reappraised with many prominent and lesser-known guests.

From politics to show business: Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg becomes one of two successors to Günther Jauch in "People, Pictures, Emotions".

Guttenberg follows Jauch on RTL: until the plagiarism affair on the way to becoming the favorite of the masses

After the voluntary farewell to Jauch, the former Minister of Defense is now taking over the baton.

Guttenberg also seemed to be well on the way to becoming the darling of the masses before the plagiarism scandal slowed him down in 2011 and cost the native of Munich his doctorate and then his political career.

The abolition of conscription also fell during his term of office - a step that was publicly castigated in the face of the Ukraine war.

Guttenberg will also have to speak about the Russian invasion, which has not only kept Europe in suspense for more than half a year, on December 11 from 8:15 p.m.

RTL does not leave him alone on the stage as Jauch's successor - because the 50-year-old will lead through the annual review together with TV icon Thomas Gottschalk, a good friend of Jauch.

According to the Cologne broadcaster, the duo "represents the wide thematic range of the show, from entertainment to society to world politics".

What both of them have in common: You have already been a guest at “People, Pictures, Emotions” in the past.

Guttenberg answered questions from Jauch in 2009, after he had become part of the federal government for the first time as Economics Minister.

Gottschalk was allowed to comment on his show career in 2011 and 2015.

For Guttenberg, however, the event at the end of the year will not be the premiere on the other side of the microphone.

Because as early as November, a documentary is to be offered on the streaming service RTL +, for which the father of two has conducted interviews in Ukraine, England, Germany, other European countries and the USA.

The topic is Vladimir Putin's power politics.

RTL had announced "two 90-minute docutainment programs".
