As-Suwayda-Sana
In As-Suwayda, the apple harvest began for the current season, amid preliminary estimates by the Directorate of Agriculture, with a production exceeding 59 thousand tons.
The Assistant Director of Agriculture in Sweida, Engineer Alaa Shehayeb, said in a statement to SANA reporter today that harvesting operations began in the lower areas and early varieties, and extended to the higher areas and to the rest of the varieties, successively, explaining that the quantity of production for the current season is good and relatively better than the last season.
Shehayeb pointed out that the total areas planted with apples amounted to 15,956 hectares, comprising about 3,473,000 trees, of which 2,842,000 trees are fruitful, the majority of which are concentrated in the areas of Dahr al-Jabal, Arman, Sala, Mafa'ilah, Qanawat, Miamas and Namira Shahba.
For his part, head of the Suwayda Chamber of Agriculture Hatem Abu Ras said in a similar statement that there are more than 500 storage units for apples in the Suwayda governorate, with a capacity of about 60,000 tons, pointing to the importance of reducing the hours of electrical rationing in the places they collect and providing their owners with fuel to ensure the continuity of their work and storage of the product.
Meanwhile, the director of the branch of the Syrian Trade Corporation, Rabie Ghanem, pointed out that the distribution of boxes to farmers in coordination with the Peasants' Union is to start the supply of the crop to the institution.
It is noteworthy that the majority of apple trees planted in Sweida are of the two types, Starken and Golden, whose fruits are distinguished by a distinctive color and hardness, which makes the texture of the fruits coherent and gives a storage capacity for a long time.
