The Strasbourg Opera has been waiting for thirty years to be brought up to standard

The future of this opera with European influence has been on the desks of successive mayors for thirty years. Everyone putting off until tomorrow what they could have done today.


With its breathless red silks, the box is more than faded.

It is tiny, and its two chairs are stiff as justice.

In this alcove, even petite people feel cramped.

You reach it by a small crooked corridor, after having hung your coat on hooks screwed along the corridor - a very Alsatian originality.

"For thirty years we have been warning about the degraded state of the

Opéra national du Rhin

and the lack of comfort for spectators

," explains Alain Perroux, its director.

As incredible as it may seem, the building dates from the 19th century, and the last scenic renovation dates from the Germans in 1943. Then the city helped with maintenance, but the regulations and the decorations have evolved.

From the balcony, the technical director, Aude Albigès, shows everything that would have to be launched to bring this Italian-style theater into the era of large stages.
