The district of Weilheim-Schongau had two hot irons in the fire in the competition "Our village has a future": Huglfing and Schönberg.

There is only one left.

Huglfing/Schönberg

– “I have goosebumps,” said Markus Huber.

Shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday, Huglfing's mayor received a phone call from Jörg Hirsche from the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture that his community had won a gold medal in the "Our village has a future" competition and was in the national final.

Huber called what the chairman of the assessment committee for the state competition said about the voting "great": He spoke of a "clear result" and a "very convincing" presentation of village life when the jury visited last week.

So it really was like the previous district decision: the jury's exuberant praise after the tour of the village was once again not deceptive.

Even then, the jurors agreed that Huglfing would probably get one of the three gold medals.

In the coming year, the municipality will represent Bavaria together with Meinheim (Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen district) and Zedtwitz (Hof district).

Bronze for Schönberg no disappointment

"Congratulations to the Huglfinger," said Rottenbuch Mayor Markus Bader after hearing about the result.

"We are pleased that someone from the region is still represented." But the head of the town hall would have been even happier if Schönberg had also won the gold medal.

But the fantastically situated village, which belongs to Rottenbuch, had to settle for bronze this time and is out with it.

At this level of competition, "it's just really tight," said Bader, not wanting to speak of disappointment.

“Of course, if you put your mind to it, because you can get ahead.

But we were also very happy to take part.” Schönberg had come a long way and presented himself well to the juries.

The citizens would have tackled together.

"A lot was pushed in the village." Participation was worth it for that alone.

The federal decision is due in 2023

Minister of Agriculture Michaela Kaniber congratulated all of the award-winning villages: "This is a well-deserved recognition of your extraordinary commitment to your and our homeland.

The Corona crisis has clearly shown us how important it is to work together.” 168 villages took part in the competition in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the competition had to be postponed twice at district and state level.

"We are excellently represented at the federal level with these three winning municipalities," said Kaniber.

There is no celebration in Huglfing yet - that should happen on October 29th at the award ceremony in Veitshöchheim.

In the summer of 2023, a jury will wander through the village again - to see whether Huglfing can even become Germany's village with the best future.
