The death toll from the sinking of a boat in a river in the north of the country yesterday has risen to 32, and dozens are missing, the Bangladeshi authorities said.
"Relief teams have recovered seven additional bodies from the Karutwa river near the town of Buda in northern Bangladesh, where a boat capsized and sank," local police chief Siraj al-Huda told AFP, stressing that sixty people were still missing.
He added that the boat was carrying about 90 people, more than three times its carrying capacity.
In turn, local media reported that at least ten people were rescued and taken to hospital.
A mobile phone video broadcast by TV channel 24 showed the overcrowded boat suddenly capsized, causing the passengers to fall into the muddy river.
A previous toll was remarkable that at least 23 people were killed.
It is noteworthy that ferry and boat capsizes are very common in Bangladesh, which is crisscrossed by 250 rivers.
