A break in the ranks of the Union? Hungary will hold a referendum on sanctions against Russia Israel today

The Prime Minister of Hungary broke line with his Western country and decided to hold a popular vote on the sanctions imposed by the Union on Moscow • "This is a decision that should be made democratically, not by bureaucrats"

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, challenges the sanctions that the European Union imposed on Russia as a response to the war in Ukraine.

Orban, the European leader closest to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stated this evening in Budapest that he intends to hold a referendum in Hungary on the continuation of sanctions on Russia.

"The imposition of sanctions was not accepted democratically, but was decided by the bureaucrats of Brussels and the European elites," Orban explained his intention to hold a referendum on the matter, adding, "even though the citizens of Europe are paying the price (of the sanctions), no one asked for their opinion."

Orban is the first leader of a member state of the European Union to fight against the imposition of sanctions on Russia.

Four days ago Orban called for the lifting of sanctions on Russia by the end of 2022.

Orban's initiative comes in the shadow of the EU Commission's threat to deny Hungary aid in the amount of 7.5 billion euros, as a sanction for the "corruption in the government systems and violations of the rule of law" in this country.
