The members of the Schongau fire brigade gave visitors an insight into their wide-ranging work at an open day.

Schongau

– "Admission was at 11 a.m., now at 12 p.m. the hut is already full": That's what district fire inspector Markus Deutschenbaur said, to put it casually, who, with his colleague Ludwig Fernsemmer, observed the enormous rush on the large turntable ladder in front of the Schongau fire brigade station.

This statement was a compliment to all the forces of the Schongauer Wehr, who had put together a great program for the day.

The positive comments of the visitors also quickly overturned after a short time at the open day at the Schongau fire brigade: "There should be a day like this every year", was the wish of many guests.

It was a family day.

There was something for everyone.

Children's dreams came true.

Two fire-fighting vehicles were on the move non-stop in shuttle service to enable children to take a ride in a “real” fire engine.

Manuela Bednatzki, Maximilian Sterl and Andreas Deibler ensured that the journeys ran smoothly.

Even with the downpour in the early afternoon, the line in front of the vehicles remained.

Married couples in constant use

And also a fire brigade couple in constant use: while Uwe Wieland was in charge of the command vehicle, his wife Martina, as a youth worker, managed three stations for the children with her group.

Miniature golf was played through hose lines, and the fire station and the runway were besieged by the little ones.

Of course they wanted to use the opportunity to collect points for the children's rally by skilfully deleting them.

And another fire brigade couple and their daughter were on duty: while Markus Böhm led the children through the training crawl space for breathing apparatus wearers, his wife Ramona was on duty at the mini golf course.

Meanwhile, daughter Marlena ruled over the cake buffet.

"The turntable ladder can be extended to 32 meters," was the message from Michael Schiesslbauer instead.

He monitored safety when entering the man basket of the turntable ladder.

Visitors also waited patiently in line in front of the to be able to see the site from above.

"We only go up to ten meters with the children, but we can go up more often," added Albert Huber.

He makes this ascension possible as a machinist with a steady hand on the joystick.

Guided tour of the new parts of the building

Three "old hands" of the Schongauer Wehr were in the operations center, where everything related to an operation was controlled.

Gerhard Neubauer gave an insight into the modern technology at the control desk.

Weather data is taken into account in the same way as major damage situations and hazard warnings.

Everything is transmitted to six different monitors – plus a large screen.

Absolutely impressive.

Michael Kaiser and Kurt Konrad had the task of leading from the headquarters through the newly built rooms in the tool shed.

The respiratory protection workshop, the new shower rooms, the social building, the hose washing system and the vehicle halls were also inspected.

Generous, clear, functional: a successful construction project.

Commander as arsonist

Meanwhile, there was an outdoor demonstration not only for housewives: Commander Werner Berchtold was supposed to "put his foot in the mouth" himself and demonstrate a fat explosion.

A pound of fat was heated in a cauldron.

Similar to the kitchen for fries.

The spectators had been brought to a safe distance for this.

After a traffic accident, the firefighters cut off the roof of the car in order to be able to save the injured person.

The commander, wearing a protective hood, turnout gear and helmet, allowed a liter of water to flow into the boiling fat, which caught fire.

The flash of fire that followed was meters high, and the fire that had caused it would require a new kitchen at home.

Not to mention the burned face.

Great interest despite continuous rain

At another outdoor demonstration, Commander Berchtold took the microphone to explain in detail what to do in a traffic accident that was being portrayed.

It was demonstrated how, after a collision between two cars, one vehicle was pulled away and secured using a cable winch and the roof of the second vehicle was separated using hydraulic spreaders and scissors.

This is the only way to get to the trapped injured driver.

He was then rescued from the vehicle with a shovel stretcher.

A concluding presentation of firefighting with the use of breathing apparatus showed the spectators how the individual groups of the fire brigade work hand in hand.

Remarkable: Despite the frequent rain showers, the interest of the visitors was enormous up to the last minute.

The Stadtkapelle Schongau under the conductor Andreas Immler, the trio of the "Schloßbergler Grill Offensive" and the firefighters with their home-baked cakes and tarts rounded off and sweetened the event.
