Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne is under threat after his kidnapping was foiled.
A suspicious package was discovered near his home, according to the Belga news agency, citing the police.
The Belgian daily newspaper »DeMorgen« also reported on the package.
The service for the removal and destruction of explosive devices was called.
Residents within a radius of 100 meters had to leave their homes.
Threats against Van Quickenborne from the drug scene became known over the weekend.
According to media reports, the kidnapping of the minister was planned.
According to federal prosecutors, "this threat must be taken seriously."
Four suspects have already been arrested in the Netherlands.
Belgium, along with the Netherlands, is considered an important hub for drugs.
Van Quickenborne had recently stepped up the fight against drug crime significantly.
