Dogs need lots of exercise.

It keeps them fit and healthy.

According to a new regulation from 2022, colloquially known as the "Gassi Law", the daily walk is a must.

Owners of adult dogs are therefore obliged to walk their four-legged friend outdoors at least twice a day and for at least one hour.

This is best done undisturbed in quiet places such as forests or meadows.

But there are still great dangers lurking in autumn.

While nasty ticks can get on the skin of furry friends in summer, it is a certain type of plant in autumn: the giant hogweed, also known as Hercules perennial.

It is native to Europe and belongs to the umbelliferae family.

Bear's hogweed is considered to be particularly poisonous, in contrast to meadow hogweed, with which it is easily confused.

After all, both are herbaceous plants that can grow up to half a meter high.

They have a thick, branched main axis and the shoots are slightly to moderately hairy.

Its flower color is white.

In 2008, on the other hand, the giant hogweed was voted the most poisonous plant of the year.

It contains toxins that are said to trigger a phototoxic reaction when exposed to sunlight or daylight and when touched.

As a result, the skin becomes inflamed, itchy, reddened and blisters can form.

These occur either immediately or after a day or two.

The skin changes only heal slowly and scar-like darkening of the skin may remain.

This also applies to dogs.

That's why it's so important to react immediately if your four-legged friend has touched the plant while walking.

Pet owners should then stop the walk immediately and wash the affected skin areas thoroughly with plenty of water.

It is also important to protect the dog from the sun, to get out of the shade and to apply sunscreen with a high sun protection factor for the days afterwards.

Finally, if the skin should change, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian immediately and have the affected areas examined and treated.
