Same-sex marriage is a reality in at least 30 countries of the 193 UN member states, according to a 2020 report by the International Association of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans and Intersex ( ILGA) and the sum of those who approved the standard in the last two years.
In addition, 30 non-independent territories and one additional non-member state of the United Nations "also offer legal equality in matters of marriage," according to ILGA.
The Netherlands was, in 2001, the first country to legalize same-sex marriage.
Europe is, in fact, the continent where more countries have legislated in favor of same-sex unions.
The most recent rule is from Switzerland, where it was approved through a referendum in 2021. The law is expected to take effect on July 1.
In Latin America, the first country in which homosexual couples were able to say "yes" was in Argentina, where it was legalized in 2010. Chile was the last to join the list in 2021.
Asia and Africa are the continents furthest behind: only one country in each has legalized same-sex marriage.

Worldwide, 67 UN member states, almost half of them in Africa, still criminalize consensual sexual activity between adults of the same sex, according to ILGA's 2020 report on State Homophobia.
ILGA's report includes Botswana, but in mid-June 2019 this country removed laws that punish such relationships in a historic victory for Africa's LGBTI movements.
Africa, Asia, and some countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and Oceania still consider consensual sexual acts between adults of the same sex as illegal, according to the recent ILGA report.
