Elfriede and Walter Meixner from Ottenhofen are celebrating their marriage, which has lasted for 65 years.

Her tip: keep going, never get bored.

Ottenhofen – "We don't have a boring marriage," stressed 86-year-old Elfriede Meixner when she celebrated the Iron Wedding in Ottenhofen with her husband of the same age, Walter, who was in good health.

Both can look back on a busy life in which sociability, a love of folk music and dance, and sport still play an important role to this day.

"It was always so funny," Elfriede Meixner recalled the meetings of the Neu Edelweiß traditional costume association in Markt Schwaben and the good team spirit.

At a traditional costume club festival in 1951, Cupid placed his arrows unerringly.

Walter Meixner saw his Elfriede, who appeared in the trio, and immediately fell in love with the girl.

"It was love at first sight." The first encounter really hit "wia da Blitz" and "he never gave in," confirmed Elfriede Meixner.

In 1957 the young couple married in Markt Schwaben.

The beautiful wedding dress was sewn by a good friend who was a dressmaker.

The dream in white cost just 30 marks.

Elfriede Meixner, who comes from Markt Schwaben, worked as a men's tailor.

Her husband Walter was born in the Czech Republic, came to Bavaria with his family as a child in 1946 and settled in Ottenhofen.

The Meixners later built their house there with a lot of personal effort.

Walter Meixner worked as a site manager at the Stahlgruber company in Poing and opened his own construction business in 1971, which meanwhile employed around 60 people.

"I was the largest employer in Ottenhofen." Elfriede and Walter Meixner have four sons, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Walter Meixner was a footballer for many years and played tennis for 30 years.

He came to the traditional costume association through his Elfriede, where he was active for 22 years as chairman of the association and for 18 years as vice-president.

In addition, the sprightly senior sat for 18 years on the Ottenhofen municipal council.

His spirited wife still claims to teach gymnastics classes.

"I have a seniors group."

Elfriede Meixner also sings in the Ottenhofener Dreigesang, has been in the choir for over 55 years and plays the guitar.

Together, the couple regularly went to Erding for yoga for ten years to learn and use relaxation exercises with Anneliese Heger.

When it was possible professionally and in terms of time, the two also discovered travelling.

"We've traveled halfway around the world," said Walter Meixner.

When there are social gatherings, the two are still on the go.

"It's important not to lose contact with the younger ones and you shouldn't stop learning either," advised Elfriede Meixner.

There is obviously a lot of momentum in the 65-year marriage.

"We are two strong characters, so it has rattled from time to time," said Elfriede Meixner.

But separation was never an issue.

"We always got together and talked everything out."

Walter Meixner added: "We always had one goal in mind."

There were many congratulations on the Iron Wedding.

District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer and Deputy Mayor Dieter Effkemann also congratulated the young at heart couple.
