The International Auschwitz Committee was shocked and alarmed by the electoral victory of the right-wing nationalists in Italy.
"The fact that the citizens of Italy believe the promises of right-wing populists and ask Mussolini's self-proclaimed heirs to the table of the republic is also an alarming sign that the European idea is coming under increasing pressure," said Executive Vice President Christoph Heubner according to the statement on the election results of the Fratelli d'Italia.
The party that emerged as the strongest force in Sunday's election is a successor party to the MSI movement, founded by fascists and supporters of dictator Benito Mussolini.
The Fratelli could form the next government in Rome with the right-wing populist Lega and the conservative Forza Italia.
After the outcome of the election, the experiences and warnings of the survivors of the German concentration and extermination camps gained new weight, Heubner said.
Because nationalist and populist governments gave the European values of diversity, openness and tolerance an “increasingly rude rebuff”.
"worrying"
Heubner is not the only one who is concerned after the victory of right-wing nationalist Giorgia Meloni, head of Fratelli d'Italia.
France's Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne had previously insisted on the protection of fundamental rights in all EU member states.
"In Europe we have a set of values and of course we will be mindful that these values regarding human rights and the right to abortion are respected by everyone," Borne told BFMTV.
»Giorgia Meloni will be a prime minister whose political role models are Viktor Orbán and Donald Trump.
The election victory of the alliance of right-centre parties in Italy is therefore worrying," said Katarina Barley (SPD), Vice President of the EU Parliament, the "world".
