(CNN Spanish) --

This weekend the film "When I'm Young" (Pantelion Films) hit theaters in the United States, which marks the return of Verónica Castro to the big screen, starring in the production alongside Natasha Dupeyrón.

It is a story adapted into Spanish from the Korean film "Miss Granny", written and directed by the creator of the series "The Squid Game", Hwang Dong-Hyuk.

The plot leads Malena, played by Verónica Castro, a 70-year-old woman, to live the long-awaited 20 years again.

Due to fate, she becomes María (Dupeyrón) and makes her dream of being a singer come true.

Not only is she 22 years old again, but she also becomes the vocalist of her grandson's band, who before her "disappears", asks her not to stop pursuing her dreams.

Music, a star protagonist in "When I'm young"

And precisely that omnipresent protagonist in the film, the music, was in charge of Julio Reyes Copello, Colombian producer and currently with seven nominations for the Latin Grammy 2022, among them in the producer of the year category.

Reyes Copello was in charge of the executive production, reimagined six of the songs that make up the soundtrack and created the remaining original themes.

Those six songs are reversals brought to modernity of classic boleros.

“I fell in love with the idea of reviving these jewels again, of bringing them into a modern language.

Let's say that this had happened before, when Luis Miguel did the boleros and when Charlie Zaa revived the trios, but there were no social networks, "Reyes Copello told CNN Pop Zone through Zoom.

“I saw this as a great opportunity to unite those four generations that are part of the Latin American family: grandfather, father, son, grandson, around this experience and it seemed to me, in addition to being a brilliant idea, a great challenge to be able to find the language that does not offend the original versions and those who listened to them and that is cool enough for the new generations”, adds the producer.

From classics to modernity

Precisely social networks and specifically music

streaming

platforms have a lot to do with "When I'm Young".

From the trailer they anticipated it, the power of reaching a

playlist

on platforms like Spotify and how this can change the destiny of a group.

One of the classics that moved Copello the most in his reimagining was “Recuérdame”.

This is a song by José del Prado known through the Mexican duo Hermanos Rodríguez Gil and performed masterfully on the film by Dupeyrón.

“Remember me was very, very attention-grabbing to

me.

At least I didn't remember (the song), as I had it in the last drawer of my hidden memory and I loved reviving it and finding it like that language, bringing more atmospheric guitars, continuing with a bolero but with the audio expressively destroyed ”, said the Colombian producer.

The task of rejuvenating old themes is one that Reyes Copello attacks with his heart in his hand and leaving his mind behind.

“What has always worked for me in creative processes is to get rid (of) reason and do it from an absolutely emotional approach, which feels good.

And that is where one finds the original DNA of the song and how I translate and how I see that DNA and having the sound resources that I have today so that they continue to serve that emotion that is contained within the song”, explains the producer.

This soundtrack is also made up of songs that were co-written and produced by Reyes Copello, such as “Nadie saber” performed by Jesús Navarro from Reik;

or “I stopped loving”, performed by Marc Anthony and Felipe Muñiz, father of the singer.

“We decided to complete that beautiful concept throughout the

soundtrack

and attack it from all avenues.

So it was reviving classics and writing unreleased songs in a style that is

timeless

.

So that's how the song that we wrote with Jesus for Jesus appears.

And there is the duet that Marc Anthony is singing with his father, who is also a little gem.

Those are two unreleased songs”, adds Reyes Copello.

"When I'm Young" is available in more than 300 theaters in the United States.

You can listen to the soundtrack on Apple Music and Spotify.
