A battery-powered electric car that moves thanks to the sun's rays: it seems so simple that no one had thought of it.
This is the bet of Lightyear, a Dutch start-up founded in 2016 by five former students of the Technical University of Eindhoven.
Lex Hoefsloot, Arjo van der Ham, Martijn Lammers, Qurein Biewenga and Koen van Ham are not at their first attempt.
Under the banner of Solar Team Eindhoven, these adventurers won four times in the 2010s the grand touring category of the World Solar Challenge, a race for solar vehicles that crosses Australia.
On the strength of these successes, the young troublemakers have become convinced that the ecological transition cannot be based solely on the electric car.
Its large-scale deployment has too many obstacles, both in terms of infrastructure and recharge time.
The solar car circumvents these problems and, to top it off, the light provided by the sun is free.
