On October 9th, the full moon shines in the autumn night sky.

A few days later, a partial solar eclipse can be observed across Germany.

Munich – Even though warm summer nights and bright sunshine during the day are slowly coming to an end, October offers a number of reasons to look forward to it.

Above all, a look at the sky is worthwhile in the autumn month.

Outshining all stars and other planets, Jupiter is particularly easy to see, and Mars is also getting stronger.

The partial solar eclipse should be mentioned as a very special celestial event in October.

Read here when it is best to observe.

Celestial events: Next solar eclipse again in 2025

Sun and moon enthusiasts should definitely mark the 25th of October in red on their calendars.

In the early noon hours, the partial solar eclipse can be observed across Germany.

The new moon phase occurs at 12:49 p.m., so you can only see the night side of the moon from Earth.

The next day it then crosses the apparent path of the sun from north to south, touching the sun's disk and covering a few percent of its area.

The next time this spectacle will take place again in March 2025.

Celestial Events: Jupiter and Mars shine brightest

Since it is getting dark earlier and earlier, the celestial bodies are easy to see.

Especially Jupiter.

The giant planet wanders through the constellation of Pisces, surpassing all stars and planets in brightness.

On October 8th, the nearly full moon will join Jupiter.

Mars in the constellation of Taurus rises shortly before 10 p.m. at the beginning of October and a few minutes after 7 p.m. at the end of the month.

The full moon is a day later on October 9th at 10:55 p.m. in the constellation Pisces.

If you want to catch a glimpse of Mercury, you have to use October.

The smallest and closest planet to the sun offers the most favorable morning visibility of the entire year between 6 and 7 a.m. from October 10th to 16th.

Autumn square as Pegasus square

In October, the autumn square is high in the south.

As the centerpiece of the constellation Pegasus, it is also called Pegasus square.

At the northeast corner of the Autumn Square hangs the chain of stars of Andromeda.

In good visibility, connoisseurs can make out the Andromeda galaxy as a faint patch of light with the naked eye.

It is our neighboring galaxy, which is made up of around 400 billion suns.

The light from these suns is on its way to us for two and a half million years.

The constellation Aries can also be seen south of Andromeda.

It is composed of three stars forming an obtuse triangle.
