Russia has expelled the Japanese consul in Vladivostok, Motoki Tatsunori, after he was arrested by the Federal Security Service for receiving sensitive information about Russia.

The Russian Federal Security Service in Primorsky Territory arrested the Japanese consul in the act, while receiving sensitive information about the impact of the Western sanctions policy on the economic situation in Primorsky Territory, in exchange for a financial reward, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Tatsunori was declared persona non grata after being associated with activities incompatible with his diplomatic status, and a note of protest was submitted to the Japanese side through diplomatic channels.
