Son of SJM CEO Su Shuhui and CUHK Research Dean Su Wenzao was awarded Outstanding Teaching Award by UGC

The UGC held the 2022 Education Council Outstanding Teaching Awards Ceremony today (26th), and selected 3 winners from 20 nominations. Among them, the winner of the "General Teaching Staff Category" is Su, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SJM


The UGC held the 2022 Education Council Outstanding Teaching Awards Presentation Ceremony today (26th), and selected 3 winners out of 20 nominations.

Among them, the winners of the "General Teaching Staff Category" are the son of So Shu-fai, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SJM, So Wenzao, Dean of the Graduate School of CUHK and Professor of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management.


The other two winners, Tulio Maximo, Assistant Professor of PolyU’s School of Design, won the “New Teaching Staff” category; the “Interdisciplinary English Course” team led by the Director of PolyU’s Centre for Teaching Development, Chen Xiaohua, won the “Collaborative Team” category.

Su Shuhui is the first to set up a special writing unit for engineering students

According to the UGC, Professor Su Shuhui is committed to promoting interdisciplinary learning, and is keen to establish the connection between engineering and humanities in his teaching. Since 2019, he has been a lecturer in the general education course of the academy, teaching students the ethical issues involved in artificial intelligence.

He also pioneered the creation of a special writing unit in undergraduate courses, especially for engineering students.

The UGC also said that he was always instructive and tireless in teaching, inspiring students to develop their potential, and was deeply respected by students.

The UGC described him as not only having a profound influence on the university, but also spared no effort in promoting STEM education to secondary school students.

Promoted from Assistant Professor to Research Dean

Su Wenzao was awarded a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from Stanford University in 2007. In the same year, he joined the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at CUHK as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Professor of the Department in 2018.

In 2019, he served as the Dean of Morningside College, CUHK, and this year, as the Dean of Research at CUHK. During his tenure, he served as a member, representative and chairman of many teaching-related committees.

So Wenzao was awarded the 2022 UGC Teaching Excellence Award (General Teaching Staff Category).

Tulio Maximo, Assistant Professor of PolyU’s School of Design, was awarded the “Emerging Teaching Staff Category”. The UGC stated that he was inspired by his childhood experience of being diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and aspired to become a teacher with Different teachers promote the ideal learning experience, including his incorporation of the concept of inclusive design into the design curriculum to promote the value of diversity, justice and inclusion, and the creation of a new subject "Design Meets Disabilities".

The UGC described the teachings of Dr Maximo as having a positive and far-reaching impact on students' learning and personal development.

His enthusiasm and contributions in promoting inclusive education are indeed worthy of support and recognition.

The "Interdisciplinary English Course" team led by the Director of PolyU's Centre for Teaching and Learning Development won the "Collaborative Team Category" award. The UGC pointed out that the team developed a variety of new and effective strategies to develop students' academic literacy skills, including: Utilize multi-modal and interdisciplinary English course resources, and develop the mobile application "Capstone Ninja".

The team has successfully built a culture that fosters student-centred and interdisciplinary collaboration, benefiting English teachers, subject teachers and students from a number of UGC-funded universities, as well as students' English proficiency and learning experience, as well as participating teachers from various universities. The teaching talents and teaching strategies have a significant positive impact.

The Chairman of the UGC, Mr Tang Ka-shing, said that the winners demonstrate a unique and outstanding example of the student-centred teaching philosophy of the UGC-funded sector.

The teaching award will be increased from the previous 500,000 yuan to 750,000 yuan per person, allowing the winners to further practice their vision of promoting high-quality teaching.
