Because the municipal council of Strasbourg, Monday, with as a major subject the financing of places of worship, was less consensual than announced.
The opposition - which abstained - immediately recalled the controversy surrounding the vote, in March 2021, of a grant of 2.563 million euros to the Millî Görüs association, to finance the work in progress of the Turkish mosque Eyyûb Sultan, the largest in Europe.
Then the debate ignited, when one of the EELV deputies denounced
"a climate of Islamophobia"
, before having to keep a low profile.
No, he nuanced, he did not target Jean-Philippe Vetter (LR), who had pleaded for
"an architectural integration of future projects into the landscape"
, citing
"as a success the great mosque of Strasbourg"
, without minaret, which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary
