Russian President Vladimir Putin today granted Russian citizenship to former American citizen Edward Snowden, known from the WikiLeaks leak scandal.
The 39-year-old Snowden fled the US to Russia, where he was granted asylum after leaking classified documents in 2013 that exposed NSA operatives, where he worked.

Japanese consul arrested in Russia
Earlier, Tokyo published a new list of sanctions against Moscow.
Russia arrested the Japanese consul in the Primorsky Territory in the Russian Far East, Motoki Tetsunori, on suspicion of espionage.
According to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), Tetsunoro was allegedly detained when he received, for a fee, classified information on aspects of contemporary cooperation between Russia and one of the countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
"As a result of the activity, which is inconsistent with diplomatic status, Tetsunoro was declared persona non grata and required to return to his country, while a protest was sent to Tokyo through diplomatic channels," the FSB said.
Japan announced today new sanctions against Russia, which include a ban on selling products that could be used in the production of chemical weapons.
