Their stage: the best Israeli female bands of all time Israel today

2022-09-26T11:40:39.014Z

The history of Israeli music is not saturated with female bands, but during 74 years of independence several Iron Sheep properties operated here • with exciting harmonies, angelic voices - and defiant distortions in honor of the holiday • Ranking of the greatest female bands of all time

the witches

Years of activity: 1992-1997, notable hits: "Until the Next Pleasure", "The Magical Nights", "Real Fear"

Not a pop band, not a classic "girl band", but probably the most talented, successful and of course the greatest rock female group to ever operate here.

He definitely deserves the first place in the parade.

The career of the late singer Inbal Perlmutter was cut short in a car accident, on New Year's Eve 25 years ago, right at the point of its takeoff. Together with Yifat Natz on the bass and Yael Cohen on the drums, the witches were part of the last wave of Israeli rock, probably in our lifetime, sometime in that decade of the 90s.

With huge hits that are still burning the radio stations to this day, the question arises how many more hits we lost and how many young bands were influenced by these breakthroughs, since Inbal died a few days before the band's reunion performance, after she started an independent career and decided to return to the witches.

The biggest miss of female rock in Israel.

Every female singer who steps on a stage in Israel today, from Rona Kenan to Nono, owes her to Enbal Perlmutter.

Unfortunately, no female rock band has since been able to reach the same places that the witches did.

in a different style

Yifat Netz: "It's very exciting that even after almost three decades have passed since the beginning of our activity - we are still considered one of the significant bands that have been active in the country. We brought something in a different style and different to the Israeli landscape - an intriguing and refreshing presentation, sound, content and melodies that have left their mark to this day.

"When we started our activity, there was a total shock around us, from us, especially from the various media that existed at the time. Suddenly we became the most talked about band, one of the best in Israel. We left a huge legacy of music and love. We received a lot of radio play and performed endlessly. By the way, we worked very hard, it didn't come Just like that. We were and still are a source of inspiration for excellent female musicians working today, or those who are just starting out, which is a huge happiness and a great privilege.

"Last June, I released an album called 'The Beginning of a Season', whose songs are played quite a bit. At the upcoming piano festival, I will perform and host my brother, Erez Natz, and Korin Alel, and this will be a crazy closing of the circle for me from that time. Your choosing us for the first place is really exciting, And I'm sad that Inbal isn't here to see it."

Unforgettable quote from the glory days: "20 thousand people voluntarily went to buy our record, without anyone forcing them, it's crazy" (Inbal Perlmutter, the late, 1994)

Chocolate mint bubblegum

Years of activity: 1972-1978, notable hits: "Amor Shalom", "Noach", "Abra Kadabra", "It's good, it's good"

Do you hear Nuno?

Think that it all started with Jordana Arzi.

And if not for Ruthie Holtzman, where would Bohbot Lake be today?

Not to mention Leah Loftin, without whom we would have rolled forward 50 years to Anna Zeke?

We probably wouldn't have discovered what we missed if it weren't for the pioneers of women's pop in Israel.

Avraham Desha Peschnel was the super-promoter of the innocent local culture, Afes, of the early 1970s.

Israel was then found exactly at the seam between the never-ending euphoria after the Six Day War and the crushing to the face that would come in the Yom Kippur War.

The band realized that in Israel, as in Israel, it is impossible not to incorporate war into the music, and through the performances and the connection to the soldiers on the front lines, managed to be exposed to an audience that is not sure that it was even their target in the original intention.

The trio was the hot and right thing, with hits such as "Noach" and "Amor Shalom", which was sent to represent us at Eurovision, and as a result international success came along with the great success in Israel.

How big was the success in Israel?

Look on YouTube for the rather long commercial of the girls in the band with one, Mickey Berkovich, for Elite Chocolate.

Chocolate mint gum, photo: Koko, wiki

At the very beginning of August 2022, the women of Chocolate Mint Gum reunited for a joint show in Tel Aviv, which testified perhaps more than anything else to the Israelis' thirst for nostalgia - and especially for good music with divine harmony.

After all, Jordana Arzi was always here, Leah Loftin (who replaced Tami Azaria in the original lineup) introduced Ofer Levy to Ashkenazi audiences in the 90s, and Ruthie Holtzman gave birth to Yonatan Barak, whose fan base was not even in a liquid state when his mother scorched the stages of Israel.

"We always thought together"

Jordana Arzi: "It seems to me very natural and logical that we are on the list. We are a female group that made a mark, and whose songs are played to this very day. We didn't feel like we were doing pop. We were a group of three female singers, each of whom, in terms of ability and skills, is truly a solo singer With a vocal lineup as diverse as ours, it was possible to create just about anything imaginable.

"We participated in almost every festival in Israel, in all the radio and television shows. It was very attractive, including the appearance, the look, which is part of a package deal in show business. We performed all over the world, and after Eurovision we immediately signed a recording contract in Germany, so we were very much on the line ". We did very beautiful musical projects. A band is a complicated thing, because artists by nature are individuals, with a need to express themselves in their own way, and if we weren't good friends - it wouldn't have survived.

"We constantly thought together, aligned and trained ourselves. It's not an easy thing. To this day, they are my best friends. The name of our WhatsApp group is 'They won't believe', like the name of our song. We met in the army, when I was 17 and a half years old, then we grew up Together, and what we know about each other - a stranger will not understand. We grew up together and went through everything together, even sad things. What kept us going all these years was and remains friendship."

You probably didn't know that: in 2013, a new song by Chocolate Mint Gum was revealed that was recorded in the late 70's.

"Shalom Iri Nochama" was written by none other than the poet Avraham Shalonsky.

Sextet

Years of activity: 1978-1983;

2004 to date, notable hits: "I make me tunes", "I was born for peace", "Cinderella"

The Israel of the late 1970s was still licking the wounds of the Yom Kippur war, but was proud of events such as the Entebbe operation or Rina Moore's winning of the Miss World contest.

The girl band Chocolat Menta Mastic had already disbanded, and the vacuum that was created gave birth to the connection between Panina Barik, Hani Alykim, Iris Shami, Ruthi Ben Avraham and Samdar Wimzer, who was soon replaced by Varda Nega.

If you counted correctly, you only reached five band members, even though the ensemble is called a sextet (the name of the sixth interval in the diatonic musical scale, if you care).

Unlike pop bands that would come later, here the thought behind the band and its construction allowed it to operate for five years and release three albums.

In fact, Sexta continues to pop up in one way or another every few years, just to test the pulse of the nostalgia-loving Israeli audience.

"I was born to peace" scorched the radio, and it was joined by three more songs that became part of the assets of the Iron Sheep of Israeli music: "Cinderella", "Spirat Malai" and "I make me tunes".

When you listen to the words and melodies today, you can almost touch the Israeliness of that time: the one who still dreams of a peace that will come, the one who believes in innocent love and performs Yossi Banai's masterpiece.

Where were we then and where are we today?

sextet in the 70s,

Sexta kept the torch of girl bands burning, in an era when Israel lost innocence and interest in girl bands, perhaps due to the fact that alongside the constant commercial thought in projects of this type, there was really an attempt to create good music.

"We dealt with the joy of life"

Iris Shami: "I am very excited to be part of your distinguished list. It was a very intense period, and I remember it as very enjoyable. Today, in retrospect and in my personal experience, I could have enjoyed it more, because it was really abnormal fun. We enjoyed the performances and the company, And we are very good friends to this day.We also perform together on and off.

"All in all, we were busy with the joy of life. We all love to sing, and making people happy is undoubtedly a great privilege. We performed at all possible festivals. Our contract was for five years, after which there was a kind of exhaustion, and we wanted to take a break and rest. After a few years, we got together again and returned to performing, So it didn't come from a place of fights or dramas. We never really broke up, we stayed on and off according to our will and ability. We started families, did other things, and when it suited we went back to performing.

"We also meet outside of the concerts, each time at someone else's house - and just have fun. You can say that we grew up together. It was a very significant period, we supported and helped each other, and we are in each other's hearts. It was a period of growth, and the songs really hold all The years. Something that is very happy."

They wrote about them in real time: "You cannot force a female singer to sing if she prefers to remain silent" (Sexte producers explain why the company was left Smeder Wimzer, June 1979).

mango

Years of activity: 1991-1988, notable hits: "Greh Bashinkin", "Starting from the beginning"

How many female bands, including bands in Israel, can say that the Prime Minister of Israel wrote a hit for them?

That Chava Elberstein, Ariel Zilber and Rami Kleinstein gave them some of their talent?

In the late 1980s, mango was the most refreshing thing in the tattered Israeli culture.

With shocking clothing, even by the concepts of the time, and unfair criticism of their singing ability, Miri Nebo, Michal Tzafir, and Yasmin Gamaliel - three members of the North Command band - managed to become the hottest thing on television and radio, when a performance on Channel One was worth 90 percent of the ratings.

There, by the way, they were sent to perform a cappella "Matahila Ma'atila" at Gabi Gazit's, to prove to the cynics that they can sing even without playback.

Mango was a great success that spawned pencils and diaries for students for the school year.

This whole project was, of course, led by Zadi French, who knew exactly what needed to be done to make the gimmick a success.

After the first album was finally embraced by the radio, the band continued with the next album, but by then the end was already known and the second album syndrome hit the band before it even saw the light of day.

Mango's songs are still played, and many artists suggest that the band members get together, even for one evening, to recreate those days.

So far they've been met with polite refusals, but maybe they just haven't made the right financial offer yet.

"Only time teaches"

Miri Nebo: "The selection of Mango for this list is very gratifying. It is a great pride to know that things you were a partner in creating leave their mark in a positive sense - and of course there is something surprising in the fact that Mango was so deeply burned in the mind. It is not something that can be known in advance, only time teaches.

"The idea surrounding the band was to bring something innovative in the local sector, and it did happen - excellent artistic management by Tsadi Sharfati, a different musical approach and a new sound for those days by Yoad Nebo and Tamir Kalisky. There was also a surround system from the Helikon company, which was not like it before. They called it that 'The oiled machine around mango', when in fact it was professionalism for its own sake in all sectors.

"The band's powerful breakthrough with 'Greh Bashinkin', written by Yair Lapid and Rami Klinstein, was simply stunning for us. We didn't understand what was happening! In one day we went from three anonymous girls, part of a military band, to faces that everyone on the street knows. It's quite a shock at the age of 20 or so The years at Mango taught me and us a lot about the profession, for better or for worse. They taught us about ourselves. We were blessed with a teacher with supreme grace, Tzi, who, among other things, also knew how to keep us with our feet on the ground, so that we wouldn't get dizzy from success, and actually kept us sane. Those were years Strong, and I'm very happy that I won them."

The one that survived: Yasmin Gamaliel, who was defined as the "singer" among the three in Mango, is a voice development teacher at the Rimon school and the only member of the ensemble who ended up staying in the field of music and singing.

The girls are a comfort

Years of activity: 2004 to date, notable hits: "Being (SO FAR)", "Everything is OK"

One thing is certain: either you want to burn yourself and the radio when one of this band's hits is played, or you turn up the volume and sing loudly - for the whole world to hear.

There is no middle ground.

Karolina, Dana Adini and Yael Deckelbaum have of course spread their wings since they started about ten years ago, and moved on to an independent career, but the Nechama girls were the right band at the right time.

The hit "To be (SO FAR)" was of course the song of the year on behalf of Ekum in 2006, and since then has been used as a background for yoga classes, weddings and parshat challah events. The consolations brought an original voice in the New Age era that was looking for exactly this type of music. It doesn't matter if Are you a business woman or a fan - at the end, Spotify plays the songs of the band that managed to touch every woman and woman, and not only in Israel. Israeli radio embraced it, of course, and the commercial success was not long in coming. And those who thought that this was a phenomenon that would pass away, discover that, like Mosh Ben Ari, they are also here to to stay.

"We didn't know we would get love"

Karolina: "The choice of us really moves me. We were a very successful band during the period in which we shone. It was surprising, because we did not know that we would be received with such love. We were a special and surprising group also in terms of the connection between us: we are three very different women, and there is an age gap between me and the other two .There is one side that is more rock and roll, one a gothic character, and one that is very floating and spiritual.

"This connection was not trivial, and only when we started singing together did we realize that the harmony between our voices is rare and winning. I remember that day, how we realized that something was happening here that was really a gift for us. That is why we also chose the name 'Consolation', because the three of us were in a period of What will happen to the music, how will we break through, how will we reveal?'

"There really was a great comfort in our meeting and a great healing. Our songs were not necessarily spiritual, and they were an expression of our difficulty in the world. Not only because we were women, but also simply like that - the three of us had a hard time. It was a time of infinite grace and magic. We were We meet at home, mainly to cry and talk about life, and during the yeshiva we would start singing and things would happen.

"There was another album that we recorded and shelved exactly nine years ago. We actually recorded a new album, we started delving into it, and somehow we left it. I don't even remember why. Today I really want a reunion, and I'm pushing for it. We were supposed to go on some new path soon, but Both Yael Deckalbaum and I have released albums abroad.

That's why we're both waiting a moment, to let it resonate, and there's a very big chance that we'll return for a few shows.

"There are those who say that female bands usually don't survive more than one album. We have to break the karma. I'm in favor of another album. I like working together, in a group, and believe very much in this power. When the Nechama girls were together, we performed all over the world and felt it everywhere that we reached it. Even when they didn't understand what we were singing about, the harmonies spoke for us."

They wrote about them: "The arrangement of 'So Far' sounds classic, and the hip-hop lyrics give something new to our music landscape. It has vocal harmonies of three amazing singers who warm the listener like the sun" 2006).

The Peak Sisters

Years of activity: 2003-2005, notable hits: "This song", "The melody always comes up"

How, how it was so short, yet so strong and powerful.

Sharona and Daniela Pick only worked on Israel's stages for two years, but the music, as we know, remains forever, which is why they are placed so high on this list.

The beginning was not promising, but what happened next changed the country.

"This song" was a pop masterpiece, when behind it stood the mobilization of the dear mother, Mirit Shem Or, and the production of Assaf Amdorsky.

The two sisters (note the recurring family motif) became youth stars, but also icons of the gay community, and when the second hit, "The Rain Again" arrived that year, it was already a pop phenomenon that could not be ignored, one that had not been seen in Israel for years.

The 20,000 copies sold of the mini-album released by the duo predicted a bright future for the two in local music, certainly from the commercial aspect.

The collaboration with the entertaining animated series "MK 22" and the immortal renewal of the hit of the military bands "Timid Oleh Mengina" only added to the glam phenomenon, and comparisons to their famous father, the late Zvika, had already begun to emerge. When they faced him before the Eurovision Song Contest, in 2005, It was an event on the scale of the moon landing.

The Peak sisters, photo: Dodi Vaaknin

But as always when it comes to Israeli pop, here too the duo parted ways, even though (again) they are sisters.

And with all due respect to Quentin Tarantino, we'd still prefer to see Daniela on the street and ask her for the immortal lines: "It's raining again/ I'm crying/ I'm excited and waiting for you/ And the rainbow is like a forgotten dream/ Reminds me badly/ Summer is so far away."

"We didn't plan to be the vehicle"

Daniela Pick: "It's a great honor that they chose us as one of the most influential female bands of all time. Everything we created came in the most natural way and from our love for music. We didn't plan to be a band, we just enjoyed singing, playing, composing and recording it in the studio. We were very influenced by the international pop sound and brought This for our songs. We never imagined such success, and to this day it excites us very much to know that people like our songs so much."

They said of them: "The choice of Piki was obvious. The studio's young and trendy world of values parallels theirs. They represent exactly the character lines of the brand, so the connection was almost immediate" (clothing brand Studio Pesha explains why it chose sisters as presenters, 2005).

A-WA

Years of activity: 2015-2020, notable hits: "Habib Galbi", "Mudavira"

In terms of success abroad, there is no doubt that this is the most successful band on the list before you. Iwa, as they are written in Hebrew, are three sisters from the Sheharot communal settlement in the Arava: Tair, Liron and Tagel to the Haim family. The group, which began operating in 2015, rides for the umpteenth time on The ethnic Yemeni wave, while combining it with dance music and electronic music.

Although it received coverage, throughout its activities the band received a relatively cold shoulder from the local cultural media, who saw it as an imitation of the late Ofra Haza in the international phase of her career. But who needs media, when the song "Habib Galbi" became a huge hit in the biggest clubs in Europe and the USA , and was performed on the stages of the most prestigious festivals in the world.

And as always, in the end they discovered the band in Israel as well, with each of its clips garnering 2-4 million views on YouTube.

Traditional costumes were also added to the musical abilities, which made the band such that each new album cover and each performance evoked reactions as much as the music itself, sometimes even more.

Since the corona virus, like most bands, the brand is trying to keep itself alive in different ways, but in any case, the next time you enter a nightclub in Paris, you'll be enjoying yourself during the party only to discover that there are still people in love with the girl group from the far south of Israel.

A-WA, photo: Tamir Mosh

"There is a lot of power in a female team"

Tair Haim: "It is an honor to be in good company alongside other female ensembles. There is a lot of power in a female ensemble, both in its presence on stage and in the songs, which bring messages from the feminine world of birth processes and women's struggles in the world about their place in society.

"A-WA is the band that made history. We appeared in major articles in magazines abroad, such as 'Vogue' and 'Glamour,' and we performed at cool festivals and sessions, such as Tiny Desk or KXP, with lots of columns and performances abroad. The fact that we are sisters, with Family and sisterhood, was a very powerful force, and we were excited to travel the world and make music that we dreamed of as children.

"We created a bridge between cultures and brought here and now the tradition we grew up on. Along with this, we also created original Yemenite music. This gave us the opportunity to tell the story of our great-grandmother and grandmother's immigration - how they came to Israel and lived in the crossings, dealing with the need to start all over again in a new land, And to touch on issues that are still burning here, such as the Yemen abductees case, which is very painful and relevant to this day.

"We were able to translate a Yemeni tradition into performances and an electronic beat on the dance floor - with a very poignant message. The exotic, Middle Eastern sound, combined with the beats, brought a very special sound, with producers such as Tomer Yosef and Tamir Muscat.

"It created something exciting in terms of visuals as well. A combination of Yemenite jewelry and hip-hop fashion, street fashion, leggings with sneakers. At our shows, everyone was dancing, and it created something happy. Our shows abroad attracted a lot of people from Arab countries.

We brought a message of peace and unity, and showed how much power music has for a friend, which is the opposite of politics and wars.

"The corona shook the music industry and the band is not active now. I set out on my own and am working on a solo album with Tamir Muscat, also in Yemeni, of course."

Write about them: "The sisters from Israel turn Yemeni music into a global groove" ("Rolling Stone", 2016).

hamsa

Years of activity: 2000-2004;

2020, notable hits: "must die on me", "Shir Hamsa"

We continue the journey in time and reach the beginning of the 2000s.

The millennium is new, the tastes are new, and in the faltering music industry, they are once again trying to put together a girl band that will strike a chord with the Israeli audience.

What crowd, you ask?

Well, that's a good question.

Mizrahi music, as it was called before it became Mediterranean (and actually still is today), became legitimate deep within the mainstream, and the combination of dance with Mizrahit looks and sounds like the hottest thing in the field.

Indeed, Hamsa's "must die on me" became an instant hit.

At every wedding in the years 2003-2005, the hit was played, which reached the seventh place in the annual parade of Network C and was even crowned as the song of the week.

If you look for the incredibly ridiculous clip on YouTube, which of course was broadcast endlessly on Channel 24, you will find that it has already passed the million views mark.

This is despite the fact that the band - whose members were Esther (Etti) Castro, Fazit Herman, Karmi Shimron, Yasmin Suissa and Naama Ethel - has already managed to pass away twice: once in its original version in 2004, and once again in an attempt to revive the band right before the corona broke into our lives.

"We plowed the land"

Ester Castro: "It's very flattering that the song 'must die on me' still goes everywhere with us. We were active for three years, we did a festival, we plowed the country with concerts. We could have continued, but we broke up due to things that didn't work out with the producers. They had a golden egg in hand , but we don't cry over spilled milk. Two years ago, right before the corona virus, we had a kind of reunion, and we were supposed to go back and do things. We met with Roberto Ben Shoshan, we were in our office and we really started working on a show, and then the epidemic destroyed the cards.
