Two planes apparently collided in Gera on Saturday evening - with fatal consequences.

According to the police, the operation is still ongoing.

Gera - According to local police, there was a devastating plane crash in Gera, Thuringia, on Saturday evening.

Two people died in an accident, as confirmed by the fire brigade.

Around 6:15 p.m., a “large contingent” of police, fire brigade and rescue services were deployed at the accident site in the Gera-Thränitz area, according to a press release from the authorities in Thuringia.

Two planes collided there and crashed over an open area.

The two pilots died, but there were no other deaths or injuries.

According to a spokesman for the fire brigade, the two casualties were two aerobatic pilots who collided in the air with their machines near the Leumnitz airfield on Saturday evening.

In June last year, a professional football coach died in a plane crash in Thuringia.

A month ago, a 64-year-old had a fatal accident with his plane near Gera.

However, there are no further details about the plane crash in Thuringia.

"The exact circumstances of the accident are the subject of the immediately initiated criminal investigations," the police said in their statement.

"Due to the ongoing use" no further information could be given at the present time.
