The foundation stone has been laid: On Friday, more than 500 visitors celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for the Freie Waldorfschule Weilheim on the former strawberry field on the Narbonner Ring.

Where strawberries used to grow, Waldorf pupils should grow up from the beginning of 2024, according to the wishes of the speakers.

Weilheim – More than half of the guests were boys and girls from the school that has been taught in the provisional building in Huglfing for almost a decade.

One of them, Leo from the 10th grade, was looking forward to a "more relaxed way to school" to the new school in Weilheim.

Emilia (9th grade), who has been there from the beginning, said how happy the school days in Huglfing were - even if only eight children were taught there at the beginning.

Today, the school at the train station in Huglfing, with its 250 students in ten classes, is bursting at the seams, said teacher Dietmar Müller, who led the program with his colleague Johanna Schumann.

The Ministry of Education is surprised by the number of visitors

He thanked the local school authorities and the Ministry of Education.

Both were "more companions than overseers".

Brigitte Grams-Loibl from the Ministry of Culture also reported on the harmonious coexistence, who was very surprised by the enormous number of visitors at the laying of the foundation stone: At other - state - laying of the foundation stone for schools, only two dozen adults were often present.

The students were not only involved in the design of the celebration, but also beforehand, together with teachers and architects, they contributed their creativity and lots of suggestions to workshops on school construction, praised District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiss.

The design by the star architect impressed the city council

As early as 2010, the Waldorf cooperative approached the city with the idea of building a private school in the district town.

The city has always responded positively to these wishes, said Mayor Markus Loth in his welcoming speech.

In 2019, the city council was even “enthusiastic” about the design by the renowned architect Francis Kéré.

Construction should be an example of sustainability and ecology

This first construction phase should be an example of sustainability and ecology, at the same time it should meet pedagogical criteria as well as the promotion of learning and community building.

That's what the builders, the "Free Waldorf School Weilheim Non-Profit Cooperative", want.

According to Daniela Ernst and Richard Bernauer, who are responsible for management and finances at the Waldorf Cooperative, the first construction phase alone with 13 classrooms, specialist rooms and adjoining rooms will cost around 15 million euros.

About 50 percent of the money comes from our own funds, including donations from foundations, and 50 percent from the Free State.

More classrooms and a gymnasium are to be built in the next few years.

A school kitchen and a ballroom will follow later.

The first phase of construction will cost around 15 million euros

Before the foundation stone, a self-made dodecahedron - a body with twelve symmetrical pentagons - was lowered into the bottom of the excavation pit, there were numerous good wishes and musical performances, including a wind fanfare specially composed by Weilheim's father Jürgen Geiger.

There were gifts from the Waldorf reading group and from the neighboring school Isartal in Geretsried for planting in the outdoor areas.
