The Egyptian Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, one of the most influential Muslim clerics in the world, known for his anti-Zionist views, passed away today (Monday) at the age of 96. Al-Qaradawi lived in Qatar and was, among other things, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and the chairman of the World Association of Religious Men The Muslims. After the overthrow in 2013 of the President of Egypt, Mohammed Morsi, Al-Qaradawi could not return to his country, due to his opposition to the current president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Al-Qaradawi grew up in a religious environment and began religious studies at the age of 4, and it is said At the age of 9, he knew the entire Koran by heart. At the age of 18, he moved to study at the Faculty of Religions of the "Al-Azhar" religious seminary, the most important academic institution in the Sunni Muslim world, and in 1953 he graduated as the top student in his class. In 1977 he founded the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Qatar University, and was its head until 1990. Following the outlawing of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, he continued to live in Qatar for many years, enjoying the patronage of the local royal family.
At the same time, he hosted a TV show on the Al-Jazeera station.
During these years he published dozens of religious books, the most important of which is "Permissible and Forbidden in Islam", which was translated into dozens of languages and sold millions of copies, and is the best-selling Muslim book in Europe, after the Koran itself.
In November 2018, he announced the cessation of his public appearances, saying that he was "passing the torch".
Ahmed al-Raisoni, a cleric and preacher from Morocco, was appointed to replace him as the chairman of the World Federation of Muslim Clerics.
