The BRK Penzberg celebrated its 100th birthday with around 130 guests.

The fact that it was actually the 101st that was committed is due to the pandemic.

Penzberg – "A lot of people talk about helping, we do it." With this sentence, Ludwig Schmuck summarized in his commemorative speech on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) Penzberg what makes the aid organization special: help to the people who do it need it wherever it is needed, regardless of skin colour, race and religion.

The anniversary was actually last year, since the company was founded in 1921.

Due to the pandemic, the event has been postponed.

The celebrations last Saturday included a service followed by the laying of a wreath at the memorial, from which the representatives of the Red Cross, the water rescue service and the mountain rescue service marched with flag delegations to the festive evening in the town hall.

There for more than half a century: Ludwig Schmuck gave the speech

Schmuck has not only experienced more than half of the history of the BRK in Penzberg, but also helped to shape it.

He joined the aid organization 58 years ago and was elected column leader in 1985.

He retained this position, which was renamed the on-call leader in 1993 when the medical columns and women's stands were merged, until 2017. He was also a watch leader for 20 years.

In his keynote address, Schmuck gave an overview of the history.

The reason for the foundation was an accident in which organized help was missing.

After a few years, the organization developed very quickly.

The Red Cross Youth was founded in 1930, and the first car was purchased a year later.

In 1942 the construction of their own house began, and in 1949 it was ready for occupancy.

In 1974, four full-time employees were employed at the Penzberger Wache, in 1978 the first civilian service came, followed by 50 more until the suspension of military service in 2010.

Despite all the changes during this time, according to Schmuck, one thing has always remained the same: "the values of humanity" according to which the Red Cross acts.

Penzberger foreign assignments - in Italy, Romania and Algeria

The numerous assignments abroad are particularly memorable for Schmuck.

In 1966, the Penzbergers helped with a flood operation in Italy, four years later in Romania.

In 1977 they erected 49 prefabricated houses after the earthquake in Friuli, and in 1981 they installed drinking water treatment in Algeria.

In their words of welcome, the mayor of Penzberg, Stefan Korpan, and district administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiss praised the services provided by the Red Cross in the event of accidents and disasters, which sometimes posed a risk to the helpers.

Special thanks go to the many volunteers who spend their free time serving the public good.

100 years BRK: chronicle and exhibition

A detailed chronicle entitled "The Bavarian Red Cross in Penzberg - 100 Years in Pictures" has been published by Sutton-Verlag.

The work is available in bookstores.

The exhibition "Save me!" about the Red Cross is currently running in the Penzberg Museum.
