The scene of the stabbing incident at Shilot Junction (Tafhun Sade Group)

A major disaster was averted last night (Monday) after an obstacle was found that had been placed on railway tracks between Acre and Karmiel.

An Israeli Arab in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of the act, and in the incident there were no casualties and no damage was caused.

Apparently, the detainee took advantage of the shutdown of the track due to the holiday, and placed the same accessory to cause the train to derail on its journey at the end of the holiday.

"An attempt to damage the railroad is a very serious incident and accordingly the law treats it with great severity," said Walla chief (retired) Shahar Ayalon, former senior police officer, who also served as fire and rescue commissioner and Israel Railways CEO. "It must be remembered that there are hundreds of passengers on the train At any given moment, any safety or security event may turn into a mass disaster in an instant.

What's more, there is a built-in problem of rescue and rescue due to a significant challenge in accessing the railway."

According to him, there have already been attempts in the past to place an obstacle or dismantle tracks to take the train off the track.

"These attempts as a rule were discovered by the railway's security unit. This is a unit that specializes only in track security, patrols along the tracks all the time and periodically finds obstacles of the type they named this time. Also, the train has additional means to detect that an obstacle has been placed, but I will not go into detail for obvious reasons."

The investigation of the suspect is being done with the intervention of the Shin Bet, and a gag order has been issued on the rest of its details. Last night's incident happened in the shadow of the ongoing tensions in Judea and Samaria.
