Homs-Sana
The farmers of the Tal Kalakh area in the western Homs countryside began reaping the groundnut season, which is the main summer crop in the region.
The Director of Talkalakh Agriculture Department, Engineer Omar Obaid, told SANA reporter that the area planted with groundnuts in the region amounts to 520 hectares and the expected production is up to 1,300 tons.
Obeid pointed out that groundnuts are grown in two areas, the first in the Akkar plain and irrigated from the Talhush dam, and the second in the Baqi`a plain irrigated from the Al-Muzayna dam, pointing out that groundnuts are grown as a basic or intensified crop after the winter vegetable season.
Farmer Issa Khalil indicated that he mainly depends on cultivating this crop every year to secure his financial income, noting that the current season's production is good compared to the previous season, where the average dunum production reached about 300 kg.
The farmer, Ali Al-Taher, talked about the process of marketing the crop, which is carried out by traders roaming the villages, pointing to the improvement in the prices of the current season, as the price of a kilogram reached about 6 thousand pounds for dried pistachios.
The farmer, Mohammed Al-Kamel, pointed out that the current season witnessed a great demand for pistachio cultivation, especially as a second season after wheat, in order to benefit from the crop’s leaves as fodder for livestock in light of the high prices of feed, calling on the concerned authorities to secure fuel for tractors during the harvest period due to its scarcity.
