Buckingham Palace unveiled King Charles III's new royal monogram, which will appear on British government buildings, state documents and letter boxes.

The sovereign's monogram consists of the intertwined initials "C" and "R", representing his name "Charles" and "Rex", the Latin word for king.

As it is the third Charles to assume the throne, he placed "III" in the middle of the "R".

Above the letters appears a crown, which in Scotland will be the Scottish crown.

The king personally chose the design from a series produced by the College of Arms, the palace said.

Charles's monogram replaces the "E II R" of Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8 after 70 years on the throne.

The Court Post Office at Buckingham Palace will stamp its first mailings with the new monogram on Tuesday, the palace added.

For its part, the Royal Mint, the official maker of UK coins, said Tuesday that details of the coins bearing the image of the new king will be released in the coming weeks.

The new coins will circulate alongside coins and banknotes bearing the image of Queen Elizabeth II, he added.

  • In the United Kingdom there are more than 4.7 million banknotes with the face of the queen.

    They will all be replaced

Updated notes featuring the king's portrait will be revealed by the end of the year, the Bank of England said in a statement, adding that the notes are expected to enter circulation in mid-2024. The central bank said the new notes will only be printed to replace worn ones or to meet increased demand.

Postage stamps will also be updated to include an image of the king, the British postal service announced on Tuesday.

Details of the image that will be used and when it will be put into circulation will be revealed in due course, the postal service said.

The new stamps will go into circulation once current supplies are exhausted, he said.
