The gas allocation is about to end.

But it is still unclear whether the levy will be tipped in time.

Many consumers are puzzled as to whether they actually have to pay - or not.

Berlin – The gas surcharge for millions of gas customers is shaking enormously.

The leaders of all three traffic light parties moved away from the controversial additional burden for gas customers more or less quickly and announced a quick solution on Monday.

However, the SPD, Greens and FDP are still arguing about funding for the billion-euro project.

Gas surcharge: Doubts about legal admissibility

"I am firmly convinced that we will come to the end of the gas levy this week," said SPD leader Saskia Esken on Sunday evening on ARD.

Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) had previously questioned the gas surcharge.

Green leader Ricarda Lang said on Monday that there were talks between the traffic light parties about alternatives.

The gas surcharge is supposed to be paid by private households and companies from October.

The surcharge is intended to support energy companies that are now having to buy replacements at horrendous prices because of the supply stop for Russian gas.

Since the nationalization of the Uniper Group last week, there have been doubts as to whether the levy is still constitutionally permissible.

Can the levy be tilted by October 1st?

Nevertheless, it cannot be ruled out that the surcharge will come into force after all because alternatives cannot be implemented quickly enough.

Green boss Omid Nouripour assumes that the surcharge will come into force in spite of everything and then be withdrawn afterwards.

SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert assured on Monday in Berlin that nobody should have to pay the surcharge, even temporarily.

"If something like this has to be compensated for in case of doubt with a refund or something similar, you have to look at it," said Kühnert.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs points out that, according to the current status, the levy will come into force at the beginning of October, but that payments on account will not be due until the end of the month.

Abolition of the gas levy: what does that mean for consumers?

But what does that mean in concrete terms for consumers?

Should the gas surcharge be tipped – and that is what it currently looks like – it is definitely advisable to check the gas bill carefully.

This is especially true if the gas suppliers have recently raised prices and justified this with the gas surcharge.

Because then the providers would actually have to deduct the surcharge from the gas surcharge.

However, the exact legal situation is still unclear.
