Does the Oktoberfest lead to a rapid increase in corona numbers in and around Munich?

A doctor sparked a heated debate on Twitter - with opinions divided.

Munich – Runny noses, sore throat, sneezing: One might think that this year's Oktoberfest has everything ready for visitors to catch an infection, also thanks to the weather.

Of course, the Wiesn flu has always been a well-known companion to the largest folk festival in the world, but this year the corona virus is also coming for the first time.

According to the first numbers, the dreaded Wiesn wave is still missing, but the numbers have risen.

A doctor from Munich is now reporting on the situation in his practice via Twitter, triggering a debate.

Oktoberfest: Doctor complains about failures due to Corona - "Thank you, Oktoberfest!"

"Thank you, Oktoberfest!", the dermatologist starts (the user does not provide official evidence for his statements. Looking at other of his posts, however, there is no reason to doubt that he actually works as a dermatologist) under his profile "NoBigDeal" his post.

To then write: "Without exception, all employees who were at the Wiesn last week, so all six people ... oh you know it anyway, it was clear." It's easy to see that (according to his Twitter profile) dermatologist refers to the coronavirus.

The comments make it clear: the topic triggers direct discussions.

Oktoberfest: Wiesn as a superspreader event?

Sparked a heated debate

“Yes, you can see it in every community.

After the fair, the number of sick people explodes.

Does anyone care?

Unfortunately not,” writes one person.

Another says: "Everyone knew it and yet it's somehow blatant to see the extent." Another commentator sees the problem at the very beginning: "And we're still at the very beginning.

The colleagues had enough time to infect many others, others again, others again...." In the comment column, however, there are also observers who have a completely different view of the topic: "100 percent of all the people I (including me) and who were at the Wiesn last week, also several times, are completely healthy.

It's crazy."

Either way: the topic of Corona and Oktoberfest is viewed very differently by many people.

So far, it seems, there have been no exploding numbers in Munich.

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming days and after the Wiesn.
