Georgie Maloney: "Thanks to Iran and Hezbollah" | Israel today

2022-09-27T11:11:24.258Z

Against the background of the bloody civil war and the fear of ISIS: the Prime Minister of Italy was recorded in 2018 as thanking the Russian-Iranian front for "allowing Christians to live in Syria"

"Thanks to a front made up of the Assad government, Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, the Christians in Syria enjoyed protection and were allowed to celebrate Christmas," said Italian prime minister-designate Giorgia Maloney in a documentary from the Dire network from the past, which is being circulated again today (Tuesday) on social media .

In a video from December 2018, Italian right-wing leader Meloni thanked the coalition of Russia and Iran in the Syrian civil war for "enabling" Christian life in Syria.

Meloni, it should be noted, supported strengthening ties with Russia until the war in Ukraine.

The leader, who heads the right-wing coalition today, mainly referred to the danger posed to religious minorities in the Syrian region by the terrorist organization Daesh, which is known for its cruel and barbaric attitude towards Muslims as well.

On another occasion in April 2021, Maloney said that Christians are persecuted simply because of their faith in places like Syria and Iraq.

She stated that "the protection of Christians wherever they are means also the protection of our identity. This means renewing the connection to the sanctity of life and the equality between men and women and the protection of the natural family based on marriage."

The video caused an uproar on social networks and won the sympathy of Hezbollah supporters.

On the other hand, there were those who harshly criticized Maloney.

"I mean, and thanks to that Lebanon was destroyed. There were Christians in the base and they don't celebrate Christmas," wrote one of the surfers sarcastically.

Another commenter wrote: "This speech is from 2018. Now she has changed her views and has become the biggest supporter of Israel and NATO in recent statements."

Like other countries in the West, Italy severed relations with Syria following the civil war, during which hundreds of thousands of people were killed and millions of others became refugees and were displaced from their homes.

In 2012 Italy closed its embassy in the country and returned its diplomatic representatives.

Furthermore, the government declared that the Assad regime is not legitimate.

At the same time, Rome refused to intervene in the region unlike other NATO members.

Surprising support from Meloni.

In Italy itself there are some fringe groups that have expressed support for the Assad regime such as the Communist Party and neo-fascist elements.

Thus, for example, following the death of General Issam Zahardin - a senior Druze in Assad's army - mourning notices were posted in Italy.

According to a report in the local press, the posters were printed by a neo-fascist party called "Casa Pound".

The party is one of the far-right groups around the world that announced support for the Assad regime.

The support for the dictator's rule is related to the opposition of those groups to the presence of the Syrian refugees in Europe, who fled the war.

At an election conference in 2018, party leader Simona Di Stefano told Qatar's Al Jazeera network that "under the Assad regime, people can celebrate Christmas openly and women are not forced to wear headscarves. Of course we don't like the ideology of the Syrian state. But We also support what they represent: freedom, openness in contrast to Arab fundamentalism and socialism."

Stefano's words are somewhat reminiscent of the words of Maloney, who heads the "Brothers of Italy" party, and also contested the elections at the same time.

Maloney is also known for her opposition to accepting refugees and non-European immigrants.

Her critics claim that her party has neo-fascist elements.
