(CNN Spanish) --

The National Weather Service defines a hurricane as a "tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph (119 km/h) or more."

Hurricanes are classified by the strength of their sustained winds on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The scale from 1 to 5 estimates the potential damage to the property.

A category 3 or higher is considered a major hurricane.

According to records from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Florida is by far the state that has received the most hurricanes, with a total of 123 since 1851.

NOAA data includes hurricanes of all categories (1 through 5) that have made direct landfall in the United States or that have affected states without directly impacting.
