Hurricane Ian made landfall just southwest of the city of La Coloma in the Cuban province of Pinar del RĂo at 4:30 a.m. ET, according to a special update from the US National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Ian has been upgraded to a major hurricane category, according to a special statement from the US National Hurricane Center.
The hurricane now has winds of around 185 kilometers per hour with even higher gusts.
Ian is located about 56 kilometers south of the city of Pinar del RĂo, Cuba and about 136 kilometers east of the western tip of Cuba.

The eyewall of Hurricane Ian is approaching the coast of Cuba, according to the 2 a.m. update from the US National Hurricane Center.
Ian is currently about 80 kilometers south of Pinar del RĂo, Cuba, and about 136 kilometers east of the western tip of Cuba.
Ian has strengthened slightly and is now packing 110 mph winds, nowhere near becoming a major hurricane.

Coast Guard closes Key West port to all boat traffic ahead of Ian

The port of Key West, Florida, is closed to all vessel traffic and all cargo operations are suspended as of 10:00 pm Monday night, according to the US Coast Guard.

Hurricane Ian has strengthened slightly, according to the 11:00 pm update from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Ian now has sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 200 kilometers per hour.
The storm is now just over 100 miles east southeast of the western tip of Cuba.
Ian is expected to become a major hurricane before making landfall in Cuba early Tuesday morning and then continue to strengthen as it approaches Florida's west coast.
The storm is now forecast to maintain major hurricane strength as it reaches the west coast of Florida.
Ian will slow down as it moves along the West Coast, exacerbating impacts from storm surge, wind, and rainfall.
There is still considerable uncertainty as to exactly where Ian will be headed in the next 36 hours.
"After around 36 hours, the tracking forecast becomes more uncertain, as there is considerable divergence from the tracking patterns in the 2-3 day time frame," the NHC said.
