Statue commemorating former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe unveiled in Taiwan

By CNN's Eric Cheung in Taipei

A statue of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was unveiled at a temple in the southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung on Saturday.

The monument, located at the Bao'an Temple in Hongmaogang, featured Abe waving, with the words "Everlasting Friend of Taiwan" written on the pedestal.

Some people who attended the opening ceremony laid flowers to pay their respects.

The Taiwanese government has called Abe a close friend of the autonomous island.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said Abe had made great efforts to promote Japan-Taiwan relations, including supporting Taiwan's international engagement and emphasizing maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

In February, Abe urged the US to abandon its policy of "strategic ambiguity" and commit to defending Taiwan, while Beijing stepped up its military pressure.

Abe was assassinated in July 2022 at a public event in the city of Nara, Japan.

At least 41 killed in protests in Iran, Iranian state media report

By Hannah Ritchie

At least 41 people have been killed in Iran in recent protests over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported over the weekend.

Amini's suspicious death has become a symbol of the violent oppression women have faced in Iran for decades, sparking demonstrations in more than 45 Iranian cities and renewing calls for the downfall of the regime.

Claims regarding the death toll cannot be independently verified by CNN.

An exact number of dead is impossible to confirm for those outside the government of Iran.

The numbers vary according to opposition groups, international rights organizations and local journalists.
