Florida is preparing for Hurricane Ian, which is making its way to the country's shores and is expected to hit it tomorrow.
The National Hurricane Center in the United States announced this morning (Tuesday) that the hurricane has strengthened and is now defined as category number 3. Before reaching Florida, the storm is expected to hit Cuba.
Following the hurricane, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency and mobilized 5,000 National Guard troops to assist in relief efforts to deal with it.
He warned that one should prepare for a potential "major disaster", saying that there would be "widespread effects throughout the country".
Some of the areas where the hurricane is expected to reach in Florida have not experienced a storm of the magnitude of Hurricane Ian in more than a century.
"This is a very large hurricane at this point," the governor added at a press conference on Monday, urging residents to "remain calm" but "do what it takes to be prepared."

In the Tampa area of Florida, supermarket shelves began to empty, and long lines formed at gas stations.
"It's never too early to prepare," tweeted Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.
Officials said the Tampa area could take a direct hit from the hurricane for the first time since 1921. Also, authorities in the city, like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, handed out free sandbags to help residents protect their homes from flooding.
The White House also issued its own hurricane emergency declaration, ordering assistance to authorities in Florida.
Also, President Joe Biden's visit to the country was postponed due to the situation.

In Cuba, classes were canceled in parts of the island, and evacuations began to take place in some of its western districts, among others near the country's tobacco valley.
At the same time, the authorities of the Cayman Islands, which are adjacent to Cuba and are under British control, are working to supply equipment to the residents.
"We have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best," Premier Wayne Fenton said on Sunday.
The Caribbean islands are still recovering from the previous storm, Hurricane Fiona, which hit the region last week, until it continued to parts of the Canadian coastline and Quebec City, where it claimed the lives of two people and cut off electricity to many and caused much destruction.
