The Danish armed forces report a total of three leaks: two on Nord Stream 1 and one on Nord Stream 2. The turbulent sea above the largest gas leak is one kilometer in diameter, it said.
The area is closed to ship and air traffic.
What is the cause of the damage?
According to the Danish Navy, there is a lot to be said for sabotage.
On Tuesday, seismologists in Sweden and Denmark reported that they had registered several explosions in the area of the pipelines the day before.
At the opening of the Baltic Pipeline - a gas pipeline from Denmark to Poland - the Polish Prime Minister also spoke of "sabotage".
Mateusz Morawiecki, Prime Minister of Poland
»Today we were dealing with an act of sabotage.
We don't know all the details yet, but it's clear this is an act of sabotage.
This act is likely to contribute to escalating the situation in Ukraine.«
The operator of the Baltic Sea lines reported a drop in pressure on Tuesday.
The capacity dropped to zero.
According to SPIEGEL information, the federal government is concerned that this is a targeted attack on the pipelines and thus on the entire European gas infrastructure and the gas markets.
While Nord Stream 2 was never put into operation after its completion, gas flowed to Germany through Nord Stream 1 until the beginning of September.
Then the Russian state-owned company Gazprom shut off the gas supply.
