A businesswoman who is based in Murnau Untermarkt speaks of an "unfavorable and dangerous traffic situation". But there will not be any major changes for the time being.

The parking spaces will remain where they are, the sidewalk will be widened at one point.

Crossing aids are also being considered.

Murnau

– The Untermarkt is a constant theme in Murnau.

The topic comes up again and again, and the committees keep talking about how traffic can be calmed on the street.

There has also been a debate about extending the pedestrian zone.

For Gundola Steiger, owner of the "Zauberhaft" shop, one thing is certain: "It's an uncomfortable and dangerous traffic situation." The vehicles are also so loud "that I can't talk to the customers".

Not to mention the exhaust fumes.

From Steiger's point of view, a second smiley would be useful to indicate the speed driven.

She thinks the best thing is controls – and traffic tickets.

"The other doesn't help."

Debate about parking

The main committee was now about the parking lots.

The status quo is that there are several in the lower market from house number 20 to 26.

One of them is for taxis.

There are also two more parking spaces in front of house number 37.

The maximum parking time is 30 minutes.

The parking spaces are primarily used by the shops located in the Untermarkt, so that customers can park their cars there for a short time to run errands.

"The parking spaces should also cause traffic calming," says the town hall administration.

"As a result, the Untermarkt is not always freely accessible, mutual consideration is necessary and the pace is slowed down."

Traders from the Untermarkt were in the town hall at the end of 2021 and made suggestions for further traffic calming.

During the conversation, the idea came up that the current parking spaces could be moved exactly to the other side of the street in order to make the Untermarkt even less attractive for drivers.

But after a long debate, the result was clear: the parking spaces will remain in their current location.

The sidewalk in front of house number 33 is to be widened.

In addition, the civil engineering administration is commissioned to draw up sketches for crossing aids.

This was decided by the councils with 11:0 votes.

Status quo should remain

"I'm not dissatisfied with the current regulation," said Mayor Rolf Beuting (ÖDP/Citizens' Forum).

Phillip Zoepf, parliamentary group spokesman for More Movement, was also in favor of everything staying the way it is.

"Traffic doesn't get any less when the parking spaces are on the other side." There are often traffic jams near the Lavazza café.

This is "not necessarily bad", remarked traffic officer Welf Probst (free voters), because it "makes the street unattractive".

There was also talk of putting up flower troughs.

But they would have to be illuminated, explained Beuting.

Veronika Jones-Gilch (Greens) recommended taking a look at the overall traffic concept, which contains "various solutions".

This was “never really” dealt with.

However, Probst warned against “calming down the lower market to death.

Man is a comfortable species

However, Gundola Steiger would also be in favor of at least partially implementing the overall traffic concept.

"That cost the community a lot of money, now it's sitting in a drawer." From Steiger's point of view, a so-called shared space would be ideal.

In such a situation, all road users have equal rights.

The business people don't want to give up.

Steiger: "That's not done for us."
