Peter Feldmann has changed his mind: while Frankfurt's mayor announced just a few weeks ago that he would step down in January, he no longer wants anything to do with it.

As the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" and "Hessenschau" both report, the controversial SPD politician has now revoked his statement - although, according to reports, this was exactly what was excluded a few days ago on his website.

The relevant passage has now disappeared from the page.

On November 6, the citizens of the city should decide whether Feldmann should be voted out.

If his deselection fails, Feldmann apparently wants to take this as confirmation and remain in office until the end of his regular term in 2024.

According to the media, he has now written that the decision about his future in office “is now exclusively in the hands of the people of Frankfurt”.

"Should the citizens of the city of Frankfurt vote in favor of the Lord Mayor remaining in office, the Lord Mayor will fulfill his duties until the end of his term of office," he wrote.

Because of the suspicion of corruption, Feldmann has to answer in court.

In March, the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office brought charges based on reasonable suspicion of accepting an advantage.

Feldmann's wife, as head of a daycare center run by Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Awo), is said to have received a salary that exceeded the collective agreement "for no objective reason," it was said.

Feldmann also made negative headlines with several public missteps.

He had to explain himself because of sexist statements on a flight to the final of the Europa League by Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville, because of his behavior after Eintracht's victory at the reception in the town hall, he is considered complacent.

Feldmann himself regretted his appearance at the victory celebration, and he also apologized for his statement on the plane.
