The Colombian pop star will have to defend her innocence in the Spanish court, after being accused of evading taxes worth about 15 million dollars • The prosecution wants to give her a sentence of up to 8 years in prison

It's not an easy time to be Shakira:

after the publicized separation from her partner, the Spanish brakeman Gerard Pique, the court in Spain announced today (Tuesday) that the Colombian singer will stand trial on suspicion of tax evasion worth millions of dollars.

Remember, the 45-year-old superstar is accused of evading taxes in the amount of about 15 million dollars between 2012-2014, when she lived in Barcelona with her ex-partner, who played in the city team as one of its stars.

It is suspected that she used straw companies to control her assets and even used her name in different forms only in countries that are considered tax havens.

Denies what is attributed to her.

According to the prosecutors, Shakira avoided paying taxes to the state during those years, even though she stayed in Spain for more than 200 days each year - and was therefore considered a resident of Spain.

The star refused to reach a plea agreement with the Spanish tax authorities and chose to fight for her innocence in court, so if convicted she could receive a prison sentence of up to 8 years in prison.

On top of that, she could receive a fine of around 20 million euros.

Of course, the Grammy-winning singer denied the suspicions against her, saying that it was a lie since she paid all her debts to the Spanish government, and also that in the years in question she lived in the Bahamas and therefore was exempt from paying taxes to Spain.

She also said that she came to the country sporadically, contrary to the claim of the prosecution, which according to the singer lived in Barcelona for more than six months.
