During its participation in the Ministerial Round Table of the International Telecommunication Union Conference ITUPP22, which was held in Bucharest, Romania, Syria signed the so-called (Bucharest Declaration... towards building a better digital future for all). What is this declaration, and what does it include?

The Bucharest Declaration, which was signed by the Syrian delegation represented by the Minister of Communications and Technology, Engineer Iyad Al-Khatib, included a number of recommendations for the future of communications for the next four years. Protecting people from its dangers, as digitization has become a major driver of economic prosperity to create a more comprehensive, integrated and digitized society all over the world, centered and based on the citizen.

The Bucharest Declaration calls for a commitment from now on to ensuring a free, open and universal Internet, interoperable, reliable and secure, enabling universal access to affordable and high-quality communications, promoting its fair use for sustainable development (sustainable digital transformation), and close cooperation with international organizations and related regionalization efforts to catalyze efforts towards a secure and reliable digital economy and society.

The Bucharest Declaration called for promoting future-oriented policies to benefit from the power of communications and facilitating digital technologies, adopting strategies and policies conducive to increasing the uptake of digital technology, identifying coherent actions that address current and future challenges, and giving priority to policies that build sustainable digital ecosystems based on innovation, Noting the importance of uniting forces to promote cultural diversity and meaningful participation for youth, as well as the inclusion of both genders and people with disabilities by enhancing participation in decision-making processes, development and innovation, and increasing decent work opportunities.

The Bucharest Declaration pointed to the importance of promoting more diversified sources of funding, to improve readiness to engage in and benefit from the advanced digital economy based on data, stressing the commitment to the continuity of digital education for all, and increasing investment in digital technologies and platforms for educational purposes, and so that the digital future is first. The necessity of collaborating with the private sector and stakeholders to invest in digital literacy, digital public services and local content in a better way.

The declaration stressed the importance of tangible steps and a strong political commitment to address climate change, by supporting research and dissemination of emerging and innovative digital technologies, that can help address the major global challenges of climate change and help societies adapt to the environmental crisis and build a sustainable future.

The Bucharest Declaration stressed the need to adhere to all its principles at the national, regional and global levels, and turn them into results with a meaningful and positive impact on societies, by encouraging innovations and promoting the development of digital technologies and platforms for the benefit of the economy and society towards achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals for the 2030 Agenda and beyond.

More than 50 countries represented by ministers and high representatives of ITU member states participated in the round table meeting, which was organized by the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization in Romania on the 25th of this September.
