Why biologists worry about their future

INTERVIEW – Medical analysis laboratories refuse to lower their prices but say they are ready to pay an exceptional tax.


While the government announced Monday a drain of 250 million euros on medical analysis laboratories, Alain Le Meur, president of the APMB, federation of medical biology, says the sector is ready to make concessions, but urges the public authorities to review their project.

- In a tight budgetary context, shouldn't everyone make an effort?

Alain LE MEUR.-

For ten years, biologists have been good students: our rates have fallen by 30%, allowing Social Security to save 5.2 billion euros.

We have structured our sector to cope with this drop in prices, while maintaining our geographical coverage, including in “medical deserts”.

With our 4,200 private laboratories spread throughout the territory, we provide a service to citizens on a daily basis by helping to unclog emergency rooms, providing on-call duty and participating in ongoing care.

However, all this work will be destroyed with consequences…
