INTERVIEW. - The columnist of "Quotidien" returns with an unpublished prime time on the year 1998 full of nostalgia for many French people.

1998 remains etched in the memory of football fans and French people in general.

But, if the victory of the French team at home during the World Cup is an unforgettable moment, it is not the only fact to remember from that year.

Étienne Carbonnier refreshes our memory this Wednesday, September 28 at 9:15 p.m. on TMC with a new issue of “Canap” filled with astonishing, funny or striking archives.

- Why did you choose the year 1998?

Etienne CARBONNIER.

- When the program was launched, it was the first year we thought about.

Then we said to ourselves that it was too obvious because it was the year that everyone had in mind the most.

After doing three shows on presidential years or with major societal and global issues, it was time to do something lighter.

In addition, beyond the World Cup, a lot happened that year.

You were ten years old in 1998, what memories did you keep of that year?

It was obviously a lot related to football.

During the World Cup, I was like crazy.

I had a poster on which I marked all the scores.

I was going to watch matches with friends.

For the final, I was in the countryside and before the end of the match, my father took me to celebrate, flag in hand, I have great memories.

In the program, we show what we have all somewhat forgotten: before the round of 16, the French did not care about the competition, no one believed in it.

Everyone thought the coach sucked.

Me, I thought it had been madness immediately... It's funny to see, then, the enthusiasm and the party.

We found a great document, made by the “Zapping” teams, which compiles amateur French videos.

We follow the match through the reactions of people at home.

It gave me chills to relive that.

And what did you take away from the rest?

1998 is also the year of Pacs and, concerning this news, I only had snippets.

I also think that my memories were a little distorted by the Manif pour tous.

We go back to the debates that took place in the National Assembly with Christine Boutin in tears and images of the demonstrations where certain slogans were clearly homophobic.

I didn't remember that it had been so violent... On the other hand, I remembered the success of the musical Notre Dame de Paris and 2Be3, but also the madness surrounding the release of the film Titanic.

That year also saw the discovery of Viagra.

What is funny is that it was found by chance, with the adverse effects of another drug!

I vaguely knew the story and I immersed myself in it.

How is the arbitration done on the subjects selected in the program?

We do it the same way each time.

We watch a lot of television news, which allows us to take the pulse of the time.

Then, we select the most significant facts.

We were sure we were talking about the World Cup but, since we knew we would never do as well as

Eyes in the Blues

, we decided to do things differently, particularly via the media.

We have, for example, found a report from the television news which followed a pizza delivery man on the evening of the semi-final.

Otherwise, in the choice of subjects, we try to find a balance with pop or societal elements.

I vaguely knew the story and I immersed myself in it.

What was the purpose of the program when you launched it?

We wanted to make an archive program different from those we usually see, treating it as I do in my “Canap” or “Transpi” columns, with a funny tone.

The idea was to make young people under 35 discover or rediscover the great moments of these key years.

Each time, we realize that many historical facts echo what we are experiencing today, such as the Lewinsky affair which took place 20 years before Metoo.

It's interesting to put things in perspective and take a step back.

Many of the topics discussed in the National Assembly at the time are, for the most part, still the same today.

Could you go back further in time?

The difficulty is to find archives.

The images are not all at INA.

We often have to contact the production companies, which sometimes no longer have the tapes of the shows, or call back the people who are in the images.

It takes a lot of time to get everything back in good quality and if we go back too far in time, I'm afraid a lot of things have been lost.

But it would be fun and it would make for a different show.
