Prime Minister Yair Lapid will talk again during the holiday period with Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen, an official in the Prime Minister's Office confirmed to Israel Hayom.
The conversation will be held following a request from the PA Chairman's Office, against the background of the escalation in the security situation in Judea and Samaria. As you may recall, during Rosh Hashanah, the Palestinian Authority Chairman spoke with President Yitzhak Herzog and Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
This morning, in an exchange of fire in Jenin, at least four terrorists were killed in a combined operation by the Nahal patrol and the undercover unit of the Mageb, based on intelligence provided by the Shin Bet. In recent times, an attack or attempted attack has been recorded almost every day, and in Israel criticism of Ozlat is increasing the hand of the Palestinian security mechanisms.
Following the audit, the mechanisms made several arrests, but their presence is not felt in all areas of the Palestinian Authority - and especially in northern Samaria. Security officials conveyed a message to the Palestinians that the IDF will restrain its activities in places where the PA will operate, but will not allow a vacuum and will continue its proactive activities elsewhere.
Despite the escalation, both the political echelon and the security establishment tend not to embark on a large-scale operation in the West Bank, which would require the recapture of the Palestinian cities and a prolonged stay in them, as in Operation Protective Shield in 2002. The trend at the moment is to continue the targeted activity against wanted persons, based on accurate intelligence which passes the Shin Bet.
However, the option of a widespread operation may be reconsidered if the escalation continues.
