The doctor who set up the Ifema field hospital, and who coordinated the policy against the virus, will direct the party's health policy

Dr. Antonio Zapatero announced this Wednesday that he is leaving, at his own request, his position as Deputy Minister of Health Care and Public Health in the Government of the Community of Madrid.

After directing the Ifema field hospital in 2020 during the toughest months of the pandemic, the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, signed him for the Administration, where he had the rank of deputy counselor and competencies focused on containing the disease.

His power – and his covert rivalry with the Minister of Health, Enrique Ruiz-Escudero – earned him a significant nickname among opposition deputies:

the covid czar

.

Now Zapatero will be nationally responsible for Health Assistance and Public Health of the Popular Party, for which he will work in favor of the party's national leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

Today I finish a hard and difficult stage, I started at IFEMA, then with the #COVID19 management, with scientific criteria and finally health care, and always as an objective to protect the citizens of @ComunidadMadrid

"Today I finish a hard and difficult stage, I started at Ifema, then with the management of covid, with scientific criteria and finally health care, and always with the objective of protecting the citizens of the Community of Madrid," Zapatero wrote in a tweet. , just when the Regional Government Council approved the end of his time in the Administration.

“An honor to have worked in the great team that we had in the Ministry of Health, led by Enrique Ruiz-Escudero”, he underlined.

“I start with great force and I am looking forward to another project at a national level that is going to be very exciting.”

Zapatero's departure has been accompanied by the gratitude of the Madrid Executive, who will replace him by Fernando Prados Roa, former director of the Isabel Zendal Nursing Hospital, who in turn will be replaced by Juan José Ramos as general director of the integrated process of Sermas (Madrid Service of health).

"We must highlight the great work that [Zapatero] has done in the ministry, and during the pandemic, for which he has full recognition from the Government," said the vice president, Enrique Ossorio, during the press conference that followed the weekly meeting of the Governing Council.

"He is going to become part of President Feijóo's team and it has been agreed that he will now have this new occupation," added Ayuso's spokesman.

Regarding the internal changes that are taking place in the Ministry of Health, he has pointed out:

Zapatero, therefore, joins the group of experts that Núñez Feijóo is organizing to try to put together the project with which he will present himself at the next general elections, scheduled for the end of 2023. Thus, the already former deputy minister, who has resigned a public salary of 104,700.36 euros ―without it being made public whether he will receive a compensation for his work in the PP―, he will continue to work as a doctor in public health and will join the PP deputy secretariat led by Carmen Navarro as head of Healthcare and Public Health.

Staunch defender of the usefulness of the Isabel Zendal Nursing Hospital and designer of the controversial lockdowns by basic health areas, this tennis lover leaves the Administration at a time when the solution of labor conflicts in the sector returns to the fore.

“For the labor sections it has happened without pain or glory, we have very little to value”, photograph Julián Ordoñez, from UGT.

"His dedication of his has been to be focused on covid."

And now that the disease gives truce, Zapatero leaves his position.
