Ryanair has made a name for itself as a low-cost airline over the years.

Now it should come to a turning point - mainly because of expensive kerosene and inflation.

"The average price for a Ryanair ticket is likely to rise from 40 to 50 euros in five years," Ryanair's Germany boss Andreas Gruber told the

.

Although the Irish low-cost company secures itself against rising oil prices with financial futures transactions, it is not possible to cushion the rising fuel prices in the long term even with cheap kerosene stocks.

Nevertheless, he does not assume that people will give up traveling.

There was an “unbroken great anticipation of vacation trips”.

Instead, he sees Ryanair at an advantage over its competitors: "In the recession, more people will pay attention to the ticket price." become even more price sensitive and so it is my view that many millions will be looking for cheaper fares."

Lufthansa is planning further price increases for tickets

Ryanair is not the only airline to apply markups.

According to the dpa report, Lufthansa has also benefited from more expensive tickets and has already announced further price increases.

"We will not go back down to the levels we saw before the pandemic," said Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr in mid-September at an event of the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin.

"We will see very stable or maybe even rising ticket prices in the next few years." It was irresponsible to offer tickets for nine, ten or 20 euros, he said in a dig at the low-cost airlines.

An increase in prices is important for the entire aviation industry, which has suffered greatly in the Corona crisis.

High ticket prices for flights even during the autumn holidays

The summer season may be over now, but even in autumn the costs are currently higher than they were before the 2019 corona pandemic. According to an analysis by Check24, flight prices for almost all destinations have risen – in Spain holidaymakers pay a full 26 percent more, i.e. 255 Euros on average for round trip.

In 2019 it was 203 euros.

Thailand (+33 percent), Portugal (+30 percent) and Italy (+24 percent) have also become a lot more expensive for air travelers.

However, the biggest price increase is for domestic flights: Here travelers have to pay an average of 38 percent more.

"On the one hand, the high price level can be attributed to the rise in kerosene prices," says Christian Meier, Flight Managing Director at Check24.

“On the other hand, the ongoing inflation is another factor for the increase.

The staff shortages of the airlines are also causing the costs of flights to rise.

These costs are passed on to customers.”
